How to transfer your website without any downtime

Before beginning this tutorial, please make sure your old hosting account is still active and your new hosting account is already activated.

Backup

  • Webpages backup – download all of your web files using your FTP program such as Filezilla
  • Database backup – backup all of your databases. If you are using MySQL, login to your phpMyAdmin and do the backup
  • Email backup – setup your mail program (ie. Outlook Express/Windows Mail/Thunderbird). Use your mail program to retrieve all of your emails so that you won’t lose any of your message during migration
  • Most of the web hosting control panels, such as cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, offer backup feature. If so you may use this feature to backup your web contents instead

Setup your new hosting account

  • Login to your new control panel, recreate the same email addresses in your new host
  • Upload all of your web files, databases to your new host
  • Check if your new host has provided you a temporary URL (ie. http://new-host-ip-address/~yournewuserid) If so, use it to check if your website is working under the temporary URL, fix all the problems if necessary

DNS

  • Go to your domain registrar then change the DNS (nameservers) to the DNS provided by your new host. Usually this can be found in your welcome  email
  • Please allow 24-72 hours for the domain propatation
